Blizzard of 2013

My cat Jinx in the frosted window looking at me like I am insane for being outside in this storm.

Mark took this for me to show Kyleigh how big we grow snowbanks here in Maine!

Snow covered ivy on the Masonic Lodge on Water Street.

Blizzard winds blowing across the intersection.

Swinging Bridge in gale force winds.

Birding Challenge ~ Lynn

"Soaring Seagull"

This beautiful bird was taken on the American side bank of the St. Croix River that runs between Calais, Maine, USA  and St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada.  My friend Sandy collects bread and goes down to feed the gulls almost every day.  They now recognize her car and when she pulls into the parking lot, they swoop in from both sides of the border to be fed.

"Kennebec Eagle"

One of the nicest days this summer was spent with friends and avid birders, Craig and Marianne Taylor on their party barge out on the Kennebec River.  On the way back home, we saw this majestic eagle posing high in a pine tree located on an island in the middle of the river.  Also, we saw several great blue heron, box turtles, sandpipers, loons, kingfisher and other wildlife along the banks of the mighty Kennebec.

"Lone Chickadee"
This little lonely chickadee was sitting on a gray birch branch during the beginning of the blizzard "Nemo" on February 9, 2013

"Against the Wind"

These poor ducks were braving the high winds and driving snow on the Kennebec River during the blizzard of 2013.  Most of the river is now frozen over and the ducks were huddling together and swimming up and down the river bank in the small patch of open water under the Swinging Bridge.

"Struggling Upstream"

I shot this standing on the Swinging Bridge in Skowhegan over the Kennebec River.  The ducks were struggling against the gale force winds and driving snow.  The bridge was swinging so hard while I was standing on it I thought I might go in the river with them.  The ducks hugged the river's icy edges and tried to get under the bridge for shelter from the storm.

 "Strutting Seagull"

This guy was strutting around the Eastport Breakwater.  I love the polka dots on his tail.

"Standing on the Dock of the Bay of Fundy"

If that isn't a song. . . it should be!  I love that the Coast Guard painted the breakwater Seagull Beak Yellow!

"Sea Loon"

This loon was just swimming around between the breakwater and the Main Street.  I love how the old red brick buildings are reflecting in the sea green water.
